In 1920s Los Angeles, the only limit to hedonism was your imagination.

Babylon follows three players in the film industry as they try to climb to the top of the Hollywood hierarchy in the 1920s. With silent films taking off and the film industry booming, there are plenty of opportunities for success and plenty of pitfalls for Hollywood hopefuls.

Director Damien Chazelle knows it pays to make movies about Hollywood.

After blistering onto the scene with Whiplash, Chazelle made LA LA Land, which won him a Best Director Oscar and a Best Picture Oscar… for about 3 minutes. But while LA LA Land was undeniably successful, it was a dip in quality for someone with the fierce storytelling instincts of Chazelle. Let’s hope this tale of Hollywood excess gets the director his teeth back.

It looks promising, with Brad Pitt doing his best “character actor with a leading man’s face” shtick and Robbie sinking her teeth into the tragic ingenue role. If you’re interested in the wild excesses of 1920s Hollywood, this should be a movie worthy of Norma Desmond.
